The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended Senator Dino Melaye, a well-known member of the party, over accusations of engaging in anti-party activities. The suspension, which took effect immediately, was announced by the party’s ward executive committee in Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1.
According to a letter obtained by Punch Online, the decision was made after the ward party executive committee reviewed a report from a disciplinary committee that had been set up to investigate Melaye’s actions. The resolution, signed by Ward Chairman Abayomi Osamika and Ward Secretary Yodson Dayo, stated that Senator Melaye’s behavior had brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party, making his continued membership untenable.
“Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party and his continued membership is no longer tenable. Therefore, the Ward party exco hereby suspends Dino Melaye from the Peoples Democratic Party, effective immediately,” the resolution read.
The letter also highlighted that the suspension was in accordance with Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution, which grants ward party executives the authority to take disciplinary action against members who violate party rules.
The disciplinary committee report revealed that Senator Melaye had been invited to appear before the committee on August 20, 2024, to address allegations of misconduct and anti-party activities.
However, Melaye failed to respond to the invitation, which the ward executives considered a “gross disrespect” to the party’s leadership and authority.
“Senator Dino Melaye’s failure to appear before the Disciplinary Committee constitutes a gross disrespect to the party and its leadership. His actions are in clear violation of the PDP Constitution and the principles of party discipline,” the resolution stated.
The ward executives further urged all members of the PDP to remain committed to the principles of party discipline and loyalty.
“We must work together to build a strong and united party, capable of winning elections and serving the interests of our people,” they emphasised.
