One year after the mysterious death of Nigerian rapper MohBad, whose real name was Ilerioluwa Aloba, the legal team representing his family continues to face significant challenges in their quest for justice. Taiwo Odumosu, the head of the Aloba family’s legal team, recently spoke with DAYO OYEWO about the ongoing investigation, revealing the complexities and hurdles they have encountered.
Update on the Investigation
The investigation into MohBad’s death has been marked by delays and complications. Odumosu provided an update, stating, “We are approaching the issue from different angles. The second autopsy and toxicology test are being conducted as directed by the court. We hope this will shed more light on the circumstances leading to MohBad’s death.” He added that forensic experts have taken the specimen abroad for examination due to controversies surrounding the first autopsy.
The decision to avoid U.S. laboratories for the second test was made due to concerns about the first autopsy’s results. “Given the controversy generated by the first autopsy, the forensic experts believed that the laboratory in Europe would be better,” Odumosu explained.
Challenges with Pathologists
Odumosu highlighted difficulties in securing pathologists willing to handle the case. “We contacted four pathologists from different regions, including Kaduna and Maiduguri, but they declined due to the involvement of powerful individuals in the matter,” he said. “We also consulted experts in America but chose to avoid the U.S. due to the ongoing controversies.”
The legal team eventually found a pathologist from Northern Nigeria who agreed to take on the case. “We suspected delays and possible interference from government or institutional sources, so we decided to seek expertise elsewhere,” Odumosu noted.
Issues with the Nigerian Police
The Nigerian police have come under criticism for their handling of the investigation. “The biggest challenge we have faced is from the Nigerian Police,” Odumosu said. “Their investigation has been shoddy, and they have refused to cooperate with us on certain levels.”
The legal team has encountered difficulties in obtaining necessary documents and exhibits from the police. Despite sending formal requests and reminders, the police did not respond. “The police’s refusal to release documents and cooperate with forensic pathologists is troubling,” Odumosu remarked.
Controversies and Delays
The exact time of MohBad’s death remains a contentious issue. “There are doubts about the time of death based on statements from those who spoke after his passing,” Odumosu said. “We are seeking clarification from pathologists and expect the police to provide more information if the investigation was thorough.”
The delay in the investigation has also impacted the family’s decision regarding MohBad’s burial. “The investigation has been very slow, and the decision to bury MohBad rests with the Aloba family,” Odumosu explained. “If they decide to proceed with the burial, it is their choice.”
Concerns About Powerful Individuals
Odumosu acknowledged concerns about the influence of powerful individuals on the case. “We are not afraid, but we are aware of the challenges posed by powerful people,” he said. “We are determined to pursue justice, despite the difficulties.”
The legal team is also focused on ensuring that key witnesses appear in court. “We will pursue legal action if witnesses fail to attend the Coroner’s Court,” Odumosu warned. “The law mandates that witnesses summoned to court must attend, and failure to do so may result in contempt charges.”
Importance of DNA Testing
Regarding the DNA test, Odumosu explained that it is crucial for the investigation. “In a homicide case, no vital issue should be overlooked,” he said. “The DNA test may help us understand any potential motives and ensure that no innocent person is deprived of their due rights.”
Next Steps
The legal team is awaiting the results of the second autopsy, toxicology test, and DNA analysis. “We are hopeful that these results will bring us closer to the truth and help the family achieve closure,” Odumosu stated. “We have petitioned the authorities to address the shortcomings in the police investigation and are exploring additional steps to ensure justice.”
Despite the obstacles, Odumosu remains optimistic. “The road to justice is challenging, but we are committed to uncovering the truth,” he said. “We appreciate the support from the public and remain determined to bring those responsible to justice.”
The Aloba family and their legal team continue their relentless pursuit of answers, hoping that the ongoing investigation will eventually provide clarity and justice for MohBad.
