Mexican authorities have arrested Gildardo Lopez Astudillo, alias “El Gil,” a suspected drug cartel leader allegedly connected to the infamous case of 43 missing college students. The arrest was confirmed on Friday, following Lopez Astudillo’s release from prison in 2019.

Lopez Astudillo, a reputed leader of the Guerreros Unidos cartel, is accused of playing a central role in the 2014 disappearance of students from Ayotzinapa teachers’ college. The students vanished while traveling to Mexico City for a political demonstration. Authorities suspect they were kidnapped and murdered by the cartel in collaboration with corrupt police officers.

A federal security source, who requested anonymity, revealed that Lopez Astudillo was apprehended and transferred to the Altiplano maximum-security prison in Mexico State. He faces charges related to organized crime, although further investigation could expand these charges.

The security source said, “The arrest of Gildardo Lopez Astudillo is a significant development in the case. He was previously detained in 2015 in Taxco, Guerrero state, but was released in 2019 due to legal issues with the evidence against him.”

Lopez Astudillo’s release in 2019 sparked outrage among the families of the missing students. A judge had ruled that the evidence used against him was illegally obtained. This ruling came after years of controversy and skepticism surrounding the case.

The disappearance of the 43 students in September 2014 has been described by a government truth commission as a “state crime,” implicating the military in either direct involvement or negligence.

Despite numerous arrests and orders for suspects, including military personnel and a former attorney general, only a few remains have been identified.

As the anniversary of the students’ disappearance approaches, their families are preparing demonstrations to demand justice and accountability. They hope that Lopez Astudillo’s arrest will bring renewed attention and progress in resolving the case.
