The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a strong directive to law enforcement officers to track down and arrest those responsible for the deaths of police officers during a recent procession by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, also known as the Shi’ite group. This order follows a violent incident in Abuja, where two police officers lost their lives, and three others were left unconscious.
The tragedy occurred on Sunday during a procession by Shi’ite members in the Wuse area of the Federal Capital Territory. According to the police, the procession turned violent, leading to the deaths and injuries of several officers. In contrast, the Shi’ite group claims that the police were responsible for the deaths and injuries of their members during the same event.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP condemned the attack on police personnel, describing it as an assault on peace itself.
“Those who murdered these policemen have murdered peace,” the IGP stated, reflecting the gravity of the situation.
The statement, titled “Police Condemn Shi’ite Attack in Abuja, Order Operatives to Hunt for Sponsors, Killers of Policemen,” emphasized the police force’s determination to bring those responsible to justice.
The statement read, “The Nigeria Police Force has vehemently condemned the unprovoked attack by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, commonly known as the Shi’ite group, on police personnel in Abuja on August 25, 2024.”
The IGP confirmed that police efforts have already led to the arrest of 97 suspects involved in the attack, and several weapons used during the incident have been recovered. He reassured the public that the police are committed to apprehending the remaining suspects and ensuring that justice is served.
“The unprovoked killings of police officers in the line of duty are highly outrageous and unacceptable. As investigations unfold, the Nigeria Police Force is determined to uncover the full extent of this attack and prevent future occurrences of violence against police officers,” the statement continued.
In addition to seeking justice, the IGP expressed his condolences to the families of the fallen officers and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“The IGP offers heartfelt sympathies to the grieving families of the fallen police officers, mourning their loss alongside them, and also wishes a swift recovery to those currently undergoing treatment, hoping for their return to full health,” Adejobi stated.
The IGP also emphasized the need for public support in maintaining law and order, particularly in the face of extremist threats and violent crime.
“The NPF, therefore, seeks the support and understanding of the general public in its quest to maintain law and order, even in the face of extremist threats and other forms of violent crime across the country,” Adejobi concluded.
