The family of late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has carried out a fresh autopsy to determine the cause of his death. This follows an order from the Magistrate of the Coroner Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
On June 26, Magistrate T.A. Shotobi granted Mohbad’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba, permission to engage an independent pathologist for the autopsy. The court stipulated that Aloba should cover all costs related to the examination and autopsy.
Monisola Odumosu, a member of the family’s legal team, announced on Tuesday that the autopsy was conducted on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20. “The second autopsy as requested by the Aloba family and ordered by the Magistrate of the Coroner Court was conducted last Friday and Saturday. This autopsy is a two-part exercise, with the first part now completed,” Odumosu said.
If the initial examination does not reveal the cause of death, the family will proceed with toxicology and histology tests on the samples already obtained. “If the cause of death cannot be determined from this initial examination, the second part will proceed,” Odumosu added.

The procedure was witnessed by Mohbad’s father, two pathologists appointed by him, and a pathologist appointed by Mohbad’s wife, Wunmi.
Mohbad died at the age of 27 on September 12, 2023, under circumstances that have sparked controversy on social media. He was a former signee of Marlian Music, a record label owned by Naira Marley, which he left in February 2022.
Following his death, the Lagos State Police Command formed a 13-man special investigation team to probe the case. His body was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy, but the initial examination could not determine the cause of death due to decomposition.
Controversy deepened when a pathologist revealed on May 15 that the autopsy could not establish a cause of death. A US-based lab later refuted claims by the Lagos State Government that a toxicology test had been conducted at its facility.
Esther Dede, a Client Services Associate at NMS Labs, stated on May 17, “Unfortunately, we do not have a case for that patient,” in response to inquiries about Mohbad’s cause of death. The family and their legal team await the results of the new autopsy to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
