Google Maps is now offering a speedometer and speed limit feature for iPhone and CarPlay users globally, more than five years after these features launched on Android. This new update will help drivers avoid speeding tickets and stay within legal speed limits.
Google confirmed to TechCrunch on Tuesday that the rollout of these features started last week in India and will now reach iPhone users around the world.
When using Google Maps for navigation, iPhone users will see their vehicle’s current speed displayed in miles or kilometers, depending on the region. The speed limit for the area will also be shown on the screen.

To activate the speedometer and speed limits, users can tap their profile picture in the Google Maps app, go to Settings > Navigation > Driving options, and turn on the features. Once enabled, the speed limit indicator will change colors to remind drivers to stay within the speed limit.
Google added on its support page that the speedometer is for “informational use only,” and drivers should still use their car’s speedometer for the most accurate speed reading.
Previously, Google introduced these features on Android in 2019 and expanded them to over 40 countries that same year.
Google’s spokesperson said, “We are excited to extend the speedometer and speed limits feature to iPhone and CarPlay users globally. This update will make it easier for drivers to follow speed limits and drive safely.”
With this update, Google Maps aims to improve driving safety and assist users in avoiding speeding fines. The global rollout will help drivers stay informed about speed limits and drive more safely.
