EFCC Increases Security at Lagos Office Ahead of Planned Protest, Poised to Prevent Lawlessness

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Lagos State Command has increased security at its office in Ikoyi due to a planned protest.

The security boost includes the deployment of Rapid Response Squad officers and Department of State Services (DSS) agents stationed at key routes leading to the EFCC office on Awolowo Road.

On Thursday, Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity for the EFCC, revealed that intelligence suggests a former governor and two former ministers are behind the upcoming protests.

Oyewale said, “We have received intelligence from some Civil Society Organisations indicating that the protests are being organized by a former governor and two former ministers.”

The protests are organized under the hashtag #ReformEFCC, and the group behind the demonstrations is called Concerned Nigeria Youths. The protesters have outlined several demands in a letter dated July 4, 2024, addressed to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede.

The letter lists demands such as “Respect our fundamental human rights,” “Stop indiscriminate arrest and invasion of people’s homes/businesses in the middle of the night,” and “Be more professional and civil in your operations.”

The protests will take place in various states across Nigeria, including Edo, Enugu, Kwara, Oyo, Gombe, and the Federal Capital Territory.

A user on X.com, identified as #PidomNigeria, shared the protesters’ demands and stated that the demonstrations aim to call for significant reforms within the EFCC.

In response to the planned protests, the EFCC has reinforced security measures to ensure safety and maintain order during the events.
