Father Paul Obayi, a Catholic priest in the Nsukka Diocese of Enugu State, has decided not to leave the church after initially threatening to quit over alleged oppression. Known as Father Okunerere, he is the spiritual director of Okunerere Adoration Ministry in Nsukka.
On October 8, 2023, Father Obayi threatened to leave the church, accusing the Bishop of the diocese, Godfrey Onah, of oppressing him and other priests. He claimed the bishop denied him ownership of several properties he acquired for his ministry. His statements stirred significant debate within the diocese and beyond.

However, in a recent video posted on his ministry’s Facebook page, Father Obayi announced that he and Bishop Onah have reconciled. “The war is all over. And whatever it is – the misunderstanding or whatsoever – is now a bygone issue,” he said.
Father Obayi thanked those who interceded during his conflict with the bishop. “I wish to announce to all persons that the case is all over and we have reconciled,” he stated. He added that they shared a meal to strengthen their renewed ties, hinting that their reconciliation took place during the last Easter celebration on March 31.
This development brings relief to the Catholic community in Enugu, a state with a significant Catholic population. The resolution of this conflict underscores the importance of dialogue and forgiveness within the church.
