Sen. Jimoh Ibrahim Says His Phone Detected 277 Nearby Guns in Senate Chamber

Nigerian Senator Jimoh Ibrahim claimed that his mobile phone detected over 277 guns around the Senate chamber during a plenary session. This surprising announcement was made on Wednesday as he urged for more technology in fighting insurgency and terrorism.

Senator Ibrahim, representing Ondo South, shared this during a motion raised by Senator Ali Ndume about recent bombings in Borno State. He emphasized the need for the military to use technology to locate criminals.

“It costs nothing for the intelligent army to get devices in their phone to know where these notorious criminals live,” Ibrahim stated.

Ibrahim added that his phone regularly detects nearby guns, noting that the proximity of an armory to the National Assembly contributed to the high number of detected weapons.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio asked, “Of the 277 guns around you here, do you know how many of them have bullets inside?” Ibrahim reassured that the senators were safe due to the nearby armory.

Highlighting the importance of technology, Ibrahim argued, “We can use technology to deploy rather than using soldiers… The military should stop using unconventional strategies to fight insurgency in Nigeria. There is a distinction between unconventional and conventional strategy. We need to use conventional strategy to fight unconventional war. Boko Haram is an unconventional war.”

Ibrahim called for a dedicated Senate session to discuss security matters, stating, “Our lives are very important.” He expressed concern over the recent bombings in Gwoza, Borno State, calling them “saddening and an embarrassment.”

He urged for proactive measures, saying, “Living with insecurity cannot be the only way to understand security… It is uncalled for, it is rejected in the totality of its formulation.”
