The South-East Governors Forum has decided to ask the Nigerian government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The governors will also visit President Bola Tinubu to discuss various regional issues.
This decision came out of a six-hour meeting held on Tuesday at the Enugu State Government House. All five governors from the South-East region—Peter Mbah of Enugu, Alex Otti of Abia, Prof. Charles Soludo of Anambra, Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, and Senator Hope Uzodimma of Imo—attended the meeting and signed a five-point communiqué.
In the communiqué, the forum stated, “We resolved to visit Mr. President to discuss pressing issues concerning the South-East Region and to interface with the Federal Government to secure the release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu.”
The forum also announced that they will move forward with the plans from the South East Security and Economic Summit that took place in Owerri on September 28, 2023. They said they are committed to implementing the summit’s recommendations on security and economic development.
