Lionel Messi and the Argentina team secured a spot in the Copa America knockout stage with a 1-0 victory over Chile on Tuesday night at MetLife Stadium. Lautaro Martinez, coming off the bench, scored the decisive goal in the 88th minute, helping Argentina escape a fierce contest.
Eight years ago, Messi experienced one of his career’s lowest points at the same stadium, leading to his temporary retirement from international football. This time, however, Argentina overcame their past demons with a narrow win in front of over 81,000 fans.
Messi, despite his playmaking efforts, was not the hero of the night. That title went to Martinez, who capitalized on a lucky bounce from a corner kick to score the game’s only goal. “In a game with fine margins, that’s what it so often takes,” said a relieved Martinez after the match.
Argentina’s defense, led by Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez, was formidable throughout the game. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez made crucial saves in the 72nd and 74th minutes, ensuring Chile could not find the back of the net. Romero was described as “absolutely monstrous in defense,” blocking every attempt by the Chilean team.

In midfield, Alexis Mac Allister stood out with his incredible passing and a few near-goals, while Enzo Fernandez quietly controlled the game before being substituted in the 64th minute. Rodrigo De Paul and Nicolas Gonzalez also played key roles, with Gonzalez hitting the crossbar with one of Argentina’s best chances.
Despite not scoring, Messi’s corner kick led to Martinez’s late goal, proving his continued influence on the field. “Messi created a few good chances that faded away, but this game was calling for him to do something magical,” noted one analyst.
Substitutes Angel Di Maria and Giovani Lo Celso added fresh energy to the team, with Di Maria nearly drawing a penalty shortly after coming on. However, it was Lautaro Martinez’s timely goal that ultimately sealed the victory.
Manager Lionel Scaloni made several strategic substitutions that paid off. “It wasn’t working, but Scaloni wasn’t afraid to shake things up,” commented a fan. Thanks to Martinez’s late goal, Argentina’s place in the knockout stage is secured.
Argentina will face Peru in their final group stage match, but their progression to the knockout rounds is already assured. As they continue their Copa America defense, the team’s performance, although not perfect, has been effective. “Messi and co. are onto the next one,” declared a jubilant supporter.
