The Nigerian media industry is mourning the death of 29-year-old Arise TV presenter, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was killed during an armed robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja.

Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie” by her colleagues, was attacked in the early hours of Monday. Her sudden death has left colleagues, viewers, and the wider media community in shock.

In a statement, Arise News described her as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family” whose voice “engaged and connected with our viewers.”

The station added: “Sommie’s voice is now silent but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”

Police authorities confirmed that investigations have begun into the robbery and killing.

Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu was a trained lawyer who later moved into broadcast journalism. She quickly became one of the vibrant young voices on Nigerian television, admired for her professional delivery and warm personality.

Her colleagues and management have described her death as a devastating blow not only to Arise News but also to the entire Nigerian media industry.

Maduagwu’s killing adds to the growing cases of insecurity in Nigeria. Despite government promises to curb the menace, incidents of violent crime remain on the rise.
