The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has openly declared support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Christopher Maikalangu, ahead of the February 2026 Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier announced that campaigns for the area council elections would run from September 24, 2025, to February 19, 2026. Maikalangu, who is the current AMAC chairman, secured the APC ticket in June after polling 51 votes at the party’s primary election.
Speaking on Monday during the flag-off of road projects linking Tunga Madaki and eight other communities to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Wike praised Maikalangu’s efforts and urged residents to support him.
“Now that INEC has said they can go and campaign officially, you all know where we’re heading to. My dear people of Tunga Madaki, I have handed over Maikalangu to you. When the election is held in February, by June, Mr. President will be here to inaugurate this road, and Maikalangu will do the needful after the election,” Wike told the crowd.

The minister also revealed that President Bola Tinubu had approved full compensation for residents affected by the construction of the airport’s second runway. He noted that the communities had long demanded road access.
“One of the things that the communities asked for was to be linked up with roads. It is quite unfair that they are releasing their land for a second runway, but yet they have no access to even go to the airport. It does not make sense,” Wike said.
He added that Tinubu had directed his administration to meet the communities’ demands.
“What does it show? It shows you the government of Mr. President is a listening government. It’s a government that cares for the people, a government that made a promise and fulfilled it,” the minister stated.
Wike assured residents that the road would be completed by June 2026, bringing development to at least nine communities connected by the project.
