Thirteen worshippers have been killed by bandits who opened fire inside a mosque in Unguwan Mantau community, Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, during early morning prayers on Tuesday.
The victims were observing the Fajr (dawn) prayer when gunmen stormed the mosque and began shooting, witnesses said.
Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasir Mu’azu, confirmed the tragic attack, describing it as a “reprisal” by criminal gangs.
“The attack was in retaliation for the community’s successful defence efforts two days earlier. The people of Unguwan Mantau laid an ambush against the bandits, killed many of them, rescued kidnapped victims, and seized three motorcycles and two AK-47 rifles,” he told journalists.

He said security forces have now been deployed to the area to restore calm.
“Air component commanders of the Forward Operating Base, Nigerian Army, and Nigerian Police Force are already on the ground to clear the bandits. During the rainy season, they hide under crops to carry out their evil acts,” Mu’azu said.
The commissioner praised the bravery of local residents and assured them of full government support.
“As a government, we salute the gallantry of the people of Unguwan Mantau. We are committed to fighting these bandits and ensuring safety across our communities,” he added.
