The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied rumours that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been cancelled.
In a statement on Sunday, WAEC said the viral report being shared online was fake and did not come from the council.
“The said examination has not been cancelled. The spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the council,” said Moyosola Adesina, WAEC’s Acting Head of Public Affairs.
The fake report, which surfaced on Saturday, July 19, claimed that WAEC and the Federal Ministry of Education had cancelled all the 2025 WASSCE papers due to widespread examination malpractice and question paper leaks. But WAEC said the report was created by troublemakers trying to damage the council’s reputation and cause panic among students.

WAEC assured candidates that the marking of scripts had just been completed and that the results would be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025.
“The council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council to disrepute,” Adesina added.
WAEC also reminded the public that only official and verified social media pages and accredited news outlets should be trusted for updates.
“All press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department of the Council on behalf of the Head of National Office,” the statement said.
