Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang

The Plateau State Government has announced a major initiative to refurbish the historic Hill Station Hotel in Jos, aiming to transform it into a world-class establishment with an estimated investment of N8.5 billion.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang disclosed this ambitious plan through a statement on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. The Plateau Investment and Property Development Company (PIPC) has signed a head-of-terms agreement with Strom Infrastructure Investment and Management Limited to fund and execute the project.

“In line with my commitment to revitalizing legacy projects, I am pleased to announce that the Plateau Investment and Property Development Company (PIPC) has entered into a head-of-terms agreement with Strom Infrastructure Investment and Management Limited to refurbish the Hill Station Hotel in Jos to a world-class standard establishment,” Mutfwang stated.

The Governor emphasized that this project aligns with his administration’s broader goal of revamping legacy projects across Plateau State. He personally oversaw the agreement process, with PIPC Managing Director Hon. Danlami Jelka signing on behalf of the hotel’s shareholders.

The agreement stipulates that Strom Infrastructure will lease, rehabilitate, and operate the Hill Station Hotel for an initial period of 20 years, with an option for renewal by mutual consent. The rehabilitation, estimated at N8.5 billion by consultants, is expected to significantly impact the local economy.

The project is set to create direct employment for about 160 citizens and provide numerous jobs for unskilled workers during the refurbishment phase. Additionally, the investment is anticipated to generate an estimated N8.6 billion in state income through its multiplier effect and create indirect employment opportunities in service provision and supply chains associated with the hotel.

The Hill Station Hotel, located on Wada Road in Jos, dates back to 1938 and has historical significance, having once hosted Queen Elizabeth II. Owned by the governments of Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue states, along with the New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC) and Leacon, the hotel has seen its facilities become obsolete and shabby over time, leading to a decline in visitor appeal.

Despite previous financial injections by state governments, the hotel has struggled to reclaim its former glory. However, with the new agreement, Governor Mutfwang assured that the Hill Station Hotel would be revitalized to meet world-class standards.

This investment marks a significant step towards enhancing Plateau State’s hospitality sector and stimulating economic growth in the region.
