Kaduna Assembly: El-Rufai’s Administration Allegedly Siphoned Over N400bn

Former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir ElRufai

The Kaduna State House of Assembly has indicted the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai for allegedly siphoning over N400 billion of state resources.

This revelation was made during a plenary session on Wednesday, where the House urged the current Governor, Uba Sani, to refer El-Rufai and other implicated officials to relevant security agencies for further investigation.

The indictment follows the presentation of a report by the ad hoc committee, led by Deputy Speaker Henry Magaji Danjuma, which scrutinized the financial activities of El-Rufai’s administration. According to Danjuma, many of the loans obtained during El-Rufai’s tenure were not used for their intended purposes, and due process was often not followed in securing both domestic and foreign loans.

“Most of the loans obtained under El-Rufai’s administration were not used for the purposes for which they were obtained,” Danjuma stated during the session.

He emphasized that the committee found numerous instances of abuse of office, including the awarding of contracts without due process, the diversion of public funds, and money laundering.

The committee’s report recommended the investigation and prosecution of El-Rufai and several members of his cabinet by security and anti-corruption agencies. Those implicated include the Commissioners of Finance, heads of agencies, and Accountant Generals who served under El-Rufai.

In response to the report, the House has called for immediate action to address these alleged financial irregularities. The findings have raised serious concerns about the governance and financial management practices of El-Rufai’s administration, highlighting a need for accountability and transparency in handling public funds.

Governor Uba Sani, who inherited substantial financial challenges from his predecessor, has been urged to take decisive steps to address the alleged misconduct. The House’s report emphasizes the importance of holding former officials accountable to restore public trust and ensure prudent management of state resources.
