A 25-year-old Nigerian man, Emmanuel Myam, popularly known as Emmiwuks, has started a bold journey to ride a bicycle from Nigeria to the United States of America to raise awareness and support for orphaned and displaced children in Africa.
Emmiwuks began the journey on Tuesday from the Lagos State University (LASU) gate, describing it as a mission of “purpose, passion, and unshakable belief.”
“This ride isn’t just about me. It’s about resilience, hope, and giving vulnerable kids a future. Every mile I pedal represents the strength these kids show every day,” he said.
Though the direct distance between Nigeria and the U.S. is about 5,327 miles (8,573 kilometres), the trip is far from straightforward. Since there is no road or land path linking Nigeria and the U.S., Emmiwuks will have to cross the Atlantic Ocean by shipping his bicycle (possibly to South America) and continue riding through Central America to reach his final destination.
His route will include difficult terrains like the Sahara Desert, and he will pass through conflict zones in Africa. He also faces serious challenges, including bad weather, visa issues, and safety risks.
From Benue to the World
Originally from Benue State, Emmiwuks first gained attention in 2022 when he rode his bicycle from Makurdi to Lagos in 15 days just to meet music superstar Davido. At that time, he had no money and worked as a crane motor assistant, earning just ₦15,000 per month.
“I saved what I could and bought a broken bicycle – just the frame. With my friends’ support, I fixed it and made that trip to Lagos. That journey lit a fire in me,” he wrote on Instagram.
In 2023, he survived a near-death experience after suffering from appendicitis, which he said changed his outlook on life.
He said, “That second chance changed my perspective forever. I started chasing my dreams, exploring the world, and doing all I can to put smiles on faces.”

Emmiwuks is not the first Nigerian to take on such an ambitious journey. In 2022, Kunle Adeyanju, also known as “The Lion Heart”, rode a motorbike from London to Lagos to raise money for the fight against polio. Earlier in 2024, Pelumi Nubi, a content creator, also completed a solo drive from London to Lagos by car.
Emmiwuks said his decision to use a bicycle was deliberate and powerful.
“Why a bicycle? Because it symbolises the uphill battles these children face and overcome every day,” he said.
As he pedals forward, Nigerians and people around the world are watching and cheering him on. Many have praised his courage and determination to bring global attention to the struggles of children affected by conflict in Africa.
His journey is expected to take several months and will depend on weather, security, and travel clearances
