A High Court in Jos, Plateau State, has sentenced a former student, Odey Emmanuel, to death by hanging for killing his teacher, Mr. Job Dashe, at Government Science Technical College in Bukuru.
Justice S. J. Bakfur delivered the judgment on Tuesday and said the court found Emmanuel guilty of culpable homicide after the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
“The defendant was clearly responsible for the death of the teacher. Such acts of violence in our schools must be punished fully under the law” the judge said.
The crime happened on July 30, 2022. According to court documents, Mr. Dashe was supervising food distribution in the school kitchen with another teacher when he noticed Emmanuel trying to collect food twice — a violation of school rules.
When the teacher stopped him, Emmanuel reportedly got angry.

Witnesses told the court that Emmanuel openly threatened the teacher, saying, “I shall do it, nobody will stop me. I must hurt this teacher.”
Soon after, Emmanuel pulled out a knife and stabbed Mr. Dashe in the chest. Teachers quickly took him to Mercy Seat Hospital, but doctors said he had already died before reaching the hospital.
The Plateau State Attorney-General led the prosecution, represented by Chief State Counsels Nanfe Mbap and Solomon Gyang Deme. The prosecution called five witnesses, including teachers, medical personnel, and police officers, to testify.
They also presented a medical report and the police investigation report as evidence. The defense failed to challenge the evidence in court.
The judge ruled that Emmanuel was guilty of killing his teacher and sentenced him to death by hanging, as provided by Sections 188 and 189 of the Plateau State Penal Code.
