Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a man, Alexander Peter, for allegedly killing his 71-year-old mother, Mrs. Atiny Peter, with a machete.
The tragic incident happened in Ikot Inyang village, Oruk Anam Local Government Area of the state.
The state Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, confirmed the arrest during a press briefing on Thursday at the police headquarters in Uyo.
Azare said the suspect was arrested on June 10 and that police are still investigating to find out why he committed the crime.
“The suspect allegedly used a machete to hack his mother to death. We are working hard to uncover the motive behind this terrible act,” the Commissioner said.

The murder has shocked the local community, with many residents expressing disbelief that a son could take the life of his own mother.
“This is heartbreaking. No one expected such a thing from her son,” a resident of Ikot Inyang village told reporters.
Police say more information will be released as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner also revealed that police arrested 54 other suspects in the past six weeks for different crimes across the state. He said the police recovered over 50 weapons and rounds of ammunition from the suspects.
Azare promised that the police would continue working to ensure the safety and security of the people of Akwa Ibom.
