Amaechi Criticises Tinubu for Starving Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has spoken out strongly against President Bola Tinubu’s government, saying its policies are making life harder for Nigerians.

In a BBC interview, Amaechi said Nigerians are suffering more now and urged opposition leaders to unite and remove Tinubu from power to save the country.

“People are dying. People are starving. I myself am feeling the effects of hunger,” Amaechi said, describing the economic hardship many Nigerians are facing.

Amaechi, who helped form the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), criticised the party’s decision to back Tinubu for another term in 2027. He said party loyalty should not be more important than doing what is right for the country.

“If the government is failing the country, you don’t just go along because you’re in the same party. You know that’s not right,” he said.

Although he did not confirm if he would run for president in 2027, Amaechi said he is open to the idea. “Certainly, I believe I can make a meaningful contribution,” he added.

He blamed the rising hunger, poverty, and insecurity in the country on poor leadership. According to him, hunger is now pushing some young people to join groups like Boko Haram and take part in kidnapping and banditry.

“The Boko Haram insurgency is not just a religious crisis. Many of those involved are driven by desperation and hunger,” he said.

Amaechi said the number of children out of school has gone up from 10 million during his time as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.

He also warned against the country turning into a one-party state, saying it could destroy democracy and stop people from speaking freely.

“We’re thinking that if we come together and win the election, the country will certainly witness change,” Amaechi said.

His comments come as talks are ongoing among opposition leaders like Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and even former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, to form a united political front ahead of the 2027 elections.
