Youths in the Rano Local Government Area of Kano State set part of the Rano Divisional Police Station on fire on Sunday after the death of a young man, Abdullahi Musa, who was arrested by the police.

The police said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the station was seriously injured in the attack and later died at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

Abdullahi Musa, a motorcycle mechanic, was arrested on Sunday evening. Police said people in the community had complained that he was riding recklessly and might have been under the influence of drugs.

While in police custody, Musa became weak and was taken to Rano General Hospital. He died the next morning while receiving treatment.

News of his death sparked anger among youths in the community. They stormed the police station, looted parts of the building, set it on fire, and destroyed several vehicles.

“Two vehicles were burnt and 10 others were vandalised,” the police said in a statement.

The DPO, who was attacked during the protest, was taken to the hospital but did not survive.

Police confirmed that 27 people have been arrested in connection with the attack.

However, some locals accused the police of firing at peaceful protesters. A resident who asked not to be named said, “We were protesting peacefully. We only wanted answers about what happened to Abdullahi Musa. But they started shooting at us, injuring two young men.”

The injured youths, Kabiru Muhammad and Muhammad Ibrahim are being treated at Rano General Hospital.

Another resident said, “It’s a sad day for our community. Abdullahi Musa was not a criminal. He was arrested, and now he is dead. We want justice.”

Kano State Police spokesperson Abdullahi Haruna confirmed the incident and said a full investigation will be carried out. “Incident in Rano, a thorough investigation will be conducted by the Grace of God,” he said.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, has visited the area to assess the situation and help restore peace.
