APC Denies Involvement in Coalition as Atiku Pushes for United Opposition Against Tinubu

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected claims by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that its members are part of a new political coalition aiming to remove President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Atiku made the claim on Wednesday while speaking to political stakeholders from Kogi East Senatorial District in Abuja. He said members from major political parties, including the APC, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and others, are working together to “rescue Nigeria.”

“We have a coalition. All the major political parties are involved. In this coalition, the APC, PDP, and Labour Party, all of us are involved. That is the way to go in confronting such an incompetent and inefficient government,” Atiku declared.

His spokesperson, Paul Ibe, later clarified that Atiku was referring to individuals within the APC, not the party itself.

“Some APC members, unhappy with Tinubu’s leadership, are talking to Atiku and other coalition leaders,” Ibe said.

The APC, however, dismissed the statement as false. The party’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, accused Atiku of chasing illusions.

Ibrahim said, “Atiku is being deceived. The APC is not in any coalition. We are growing stronger every day and are not worried about his political drama. If anyone in APC is speaking with him, they’re only misleading him, like in his past failed coalitions.”

Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared itself the official platform for the new coalition.

Speaking at the party’s National Executive Committee meeting on Thursday in Abuja, ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, represented by Board of Trustees Chairman Mani Ahmed, confirmed the development.

“I can categorically inform you that the African Democratic Congress is the coalition party in Nigeria. What remains is to dot the I’s and cross the T’s,” he said.

Nwosu said Nigeria’s worsening economy under the current government is pushing more citizens into poverty, adding, “About five million Nigerians fall into poverty every year. This is unacceptable.”

He said the ADC is open to all Nigerians who believe in real democracy and is working closely with civil society and grassroots groups.

Nwosu added, “Politicians alone cannot change Nigeria. That’s why we are building a strong, people-led movement for lasting change.”

The talks about a united opposition come as more Nigerians express concern over economic hardship and governance under President Tinubu
