President Bola Tinubu has promised to use modern technology to fight terrorism, kidnapping, and banditry in Nigeria, especially in the North West region.
Speaking at a state dinner in Katsina on Friday night, Tinubu said his government would reclaim forests taken over by criminals and make the region safe for development.
The President said, “We will invest more in technology and take over the forests. Security is a national issue, not just local or regional. If we genuinely want investment in Nigeria, we must address security.”
Tinubu was responding to concerns raised by former Governor Aminu Masari, who described insecurity as a major challenge in the North West.
Recent reports show that the region has suffered hundreds of attacks and thousands of kidnappings. In Katsina alone, there were 277 attacks and 684 deaths in June 2024. One major hotspot is Rugu Forest, which stretches 220 kilometres and is home to over 100 armed camps, according to security officials.
President Tinubu said, “Investment is cowardly. It will not go where there is banditry and terrorism. We will solve the problem together with the states and local councils.”
He also promised that people affected by terrorism would get support to rebuild their lives.
Tinubu praised Katsina’s past and present leaders, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he described as a man of integrity. “I wish him well,” he added.

Governor Dikko Radda announced that the state had set up a security team to gather intelligence and help fight crime. He also revealed plans to expand Katsina airport, which he said would create 2,700 jobs and cost N54 billion.
Former Governor Masari thanked the President for appointing two ministers from Katsina to the Federal Executive Council and praised Tinubu’s courage and leadership.
“You have the political will and courage to face the challenges of this country,” Masari said. “Leadership is not about when things are easy. I know you can do it.”
Several governors from across Nigeria, including those from Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Benue, Yobe, Sokoto, and Kwara, attended the event.
