Businesswoman and socialite Aisha Achimugu has started a hunger strike after her arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.
EFCC officials arrested her around 5 a.m. on Tuesday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport when she arrived from London. The commission had earlier declared her wanted in March over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
Her lawyer, Mr. Chikaosolu Ojukwu, said Achimugu returned voluntarily to Nigeria to honour the EFCC’s invitation and attend a court hearing.
“In light of what happened in court on Monday, our client returned based on the court’s directive. But she was arrested at the airport,” Ojukwu said in a statement on Tuesday.

He added, “She has immediately gone on a hunger strike. She is a prisoner of conscience, and we believe her arrest goes against the rule of law.”
A Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered her to report to the EFCC on Tuesday and appear before the court on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.
Ojukwu stressed that Achimugu had informed the court of her intention to meet with the EFCC and had not tried to avoid investigation. He said she leads a major business group, Felak Concept Group, which includes companies in engineering, maritime, oil and gas, and technology.
