A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Adewale, has described critics of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as “gluttons” who are only thinking about their personal interest and not the country.
Speaking on Friday, Adewale defended Atiku’s right to run for president in 2027 and accused party members like Ayodele Fayose and Bode George of working against the PDP from within.
“Atiku is one of the politicians that I know that is satisfied with whatever he has. Most other politicians, like his critics, are gluttons,” Adewale said.
He expressed concern that most of the opposition against Atiku comes from within the PDP. “It is unfortunate that the unrelenting opposition that Atiku has is still in the PDP, his party, not even outside the PDP,” he added.
Bode George had earlier advised Atiku to resign from the PDP over alleged anti-party activities, while Ayodele Fayose vowed to work against Atiku’s ambition if he decides to contest the 2027 presidential election.

But Adewale insisted Atiku remains the best option for the party. “He has been tested and tried as part of the few politicians with contentment, and he has never given up. He understands Nigerian politics. He knows our challenges compared to other politicians that just want to grab power to get wealth.”
He warned that anyone within the PDP trying to stop Atiku is helping the ruling party. “Anyone within the PDP saying Atiku should not contest in 2027 is working for the opposition and not for the party or the country,” Adewale said.
“They are working for their personal pocket. Therefore, they should not be listened to. We must discard their opinions. All dissenting voices in our party are working for their stomach, not for Nigeria,” he added.
Adewale also said that no opposition party, not even the Labour Party, can defeat the ruling party alone, hinting at the need for unity in the PDP.
