MTN Group, Africa’s biggest mobile network operator, has confirmed it suffered a cyberattack but assured customers that its main systems are still safe and working.
The company revealed on Thursday that an unknown third party accessed parts of its systems and some personal data of customers in certain countries.
However, MTN said, “There is no evidence of compromise to any of our critical infrastructure, core MTN platforms, or services. Our core network, billing systems, and financial services infrastructure remain secure and fully operational.”
MTN, which operates in 19 countries and serves 280 million people, said it has reported the breach to the South African Police Service and the Hawks, a special crime-fighting unit. It is also working with officials in affected countries.
“We have informed the relevant country authorities and will continue to update them on an ongoing basis while working closely with them and law enforcement agencies to support their investigations,” the company stated.

MTN is now notifying affected customers and following legal steps required in each country. It also urged customers to take precautions to protect themselves from fraud.
The company advised users to place fraud alerts on their credit reports, update apps regularly, use strong passwords, and avoid clicking suspicious links.
MTN also warned customers not to share sensitive details like passwords, PINs, or one-time passwords through phone calls, texts, or emails.
