Bayer Leverkusen made history on Saturday by becoming the first team to complete a Bundesliga season unbeaten, following a 2-1 home victory over FC Augsburg. This triumph extended their season-long run to an impressive 51 games without defeat.
Leverkusen, who secured their first Bundesliga title in April, are now on course for a historic treble, with upcoming finals in both the Europa League and the German Cup. Goals from Victor Boniface and Robert Andrich sealed their landmark win at the BayArena.
The match started with an early lead for Leverkusen when Amine Adli capitalized on an error by Augsburg goalkeeper Tomas Koubek. Adli won possession and set up Boniface for a close-range finish in the 12th minute. Robert Andrich then doubled the lead with a backheel goal in the 27th minute, cementing Leverkusen’s dominance.
Augsburg’s teenager Mert Komor offered a glimmer of hope for the visitors with a stunning strike in the 62nd minute on his first start. However, Leverkusen’s solid defense ensured they held on to their lead, clinching the victory.
Leverkusen’s remarkable season has been guided by coach Xabi Alonso, who praised his team’s historic achievement. “This is a momentous occasion for the club and for these players,” Alonso said. “Going an entire season unbeaten in one of the toughest leagues in the world is a testament to their hard work and dedication.”
Goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky and his teammates celebrated their unprecedented accomplishment with the Bundesliga trophy, marking a significant milestone in the club’s history.
With the Europa League final against Atalanta and the German Cup final ahead, Leverkusen has the opportunity to secure an unbeaten treble, further solidifying their status as one of the top teams in Europe this season.
