The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Sunday (today) as Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal.
Speaking at his palace in Sokoto on Saturday night, the Sultan announced that the crescent moon had been sighted in several locations across Nigeria. According to him, Islamic leaders confirmed the sighting, and the Sultanate Council verified the reports before officially declaring Eid.
He said, “The moon was sighted in various places, including Sokoto, Kano, Maiduguri, Jos, Zaria, and Kaduna. This confirms the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal.”
The Sultan congratulated Muslims across the country and urged them to reflect on the lessons of Ramadan—faith, self-discipline, and kindness.
Call for Peace and National Unity
Beyond the celebrations, the Sultan encouraged Nigerians, regardless of religion or ethnicity, to live in peace and harmony. He stressed the importance of tolerance and unity, especially in a country as diverse as Nigeria.
He said, “We must continue to respect and love one another. Peace and unity are essential for national progress, and I urge all Nigerians to work together to build a better country.”
He also called on Muslims to pray for Nigeria and its leaders, asking God to grant the nation wisdom and strength to overcome its many challenges.

Fire Service on High Alert for Eid Celebrations
Meanwhile, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) has placed its personnel on red alert to ensure quick responses to emergencies during the festive period.
The Controller General of the FFS, Abdulganiyu Jaji, issued a statement on Saturday in Abuja, warning Nigerians to be extra careful, especially in their homes.
Jaji said, “I urge Nigerians to take extra precautions, particularly while cooking. Do not leave cooking unattended, store gas cylinders outside the kitchen, and keep matches away from children.”
He emphasized the dangers of fuel tanker accidents during festive travel and advised citizens to follow safety standards to protect lives and infrastructure.
