Alex Ekwueme University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, has indefinitely suspended Alex Okemini, a former Senior Special Assistant to the Ebonyi State Governor on Security, over allegations of cult-related activities.

Okemini, who was recently admitted to study Political Science, was dismissed from his government position on Tuesday after controversy erupted during the university’s matriculation ceremony.

During the event, Okemini was photographed wearing an insignia suspected to belong to a secret cult group. The image quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread condemnation. Many called for his immediate dismissal from both his government role and the university.

In response to the public outcry, Governor Ogbonnaya Nwifuru, through a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Grace Umezuruike, announced Okemini’s removal from office.

Following the governor’s decision, the university also took action by suspending Okemini indefinitely.

In a letter signed by the university’s Registrar, Ifeanyi Igwe, the institution stated that the suspension was due to alleged cult-related behavior, which violated the matriculation oath.

“The Vice-Chancellor has considered the report on the allegation of cult-related behaviour levelled against you based on the display of cultism as shown on March 14, 2025, during the matriculation ceremony of the university,” the letter read.

The university emphasized that cultism is strictly prohibited and poses a security and moral threat to the institution.

“You are hereby informed of your matriculation oath and the fact that cultism and cult-related activities are unacceptable and against the rules and regulations governing students’ activities in the university,” the letter added.

The university further stated that Okemini’s suspension would remain in effect pending an investigation by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

“Consequently, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Senate, has directed that you be suspended indefinitely from the university pending the outcome of the investigation of this matter,” the letter concluded.

Okemini has not publicly responded to the allegations, and it remains unclear what legal steps he may take regarding his suspension.

Meanwhile, university authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining discipline and ensuring a safe learning environment for all students.
