The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 64-year-old lawyer, Barrister Donald Mbamah, for allegedly shooting and killing a 16-year-old student, Paul Victor, in Owerri.
The tragic incident happened on Monday, March 17, 2025, at Mbamah’s residence in Area N, World Bank, New Owerri. According to eyewitnesses, the teenager, a student of Urban Development Secondary School, had jumped over the lawyer’s fence to retrieve a football when he was shot.
The Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday, March 21, 2025.
“The Imo State Police Command has arrested Barrister Donald Mbamah in connection with the shooting of 16-year-old Paul Victor on March 17, 2025. The incident occurred at approximately 12:34 PM when the student allegedly entered the suspect’s compound to retrieve a football,” Okoye stated.

After the shooting, neighbors alerted the police. Officers from the New Owerri Police Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), responded quickly to the distress call.
“The police operatives arrived at the scene, arrested the suspect, and immediately rushed the victim to General Hospital, Umuguma, for treatment. Sadly, despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead on March 20, 2025,” Okoye added.
Following his arrest, Barrister Mbamah was moved to the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further questioning. The police have also launched an investigation to recover the firearm used in the shooting.
“We have collected evidence, including photographs from the crime scene, and are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The suspect remains in custody and will be charged in court as soon as the investigation is completed,” Okoye assured.
The police have urged residents to remain calm and allow the authorities to handle the case through legal channels.
“The Imo State Police Command expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. We assure the public that justice will be served. We also caution against any form of mob action or taking the law into one’s hands,” Okoye stated.
