Gunmen have shot and killed Idris Sakaina, the leader of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) in Kwara State. The attack happened on Saturday night in front of his residence in Oke Ose, Ilorin.
Witnesses said the 32-year-old was attacked around 10 p.m. by unidentified gunmen who shot him and fled the scene. No items were taken from him, raising suspicions about the motive behind the killing.
Eyewitnesses Express Shock
A close associate of Sakaina, Aina’u Sarki, said he had spoken with him just minutes before the attack. “I was with him 20 minutes before he was killed. Someone called me on the phone and told me that he was shot dead,” Sarki said, expressing disbelief.
The murder has sent shockwaves through the Miyetti Allah community and the larger Fulani settlement in the area. Many have described Sakaina as a peaceful leader who worked to promote unity and resolve conflicts among cattle breeders.

Government and Police Respond
The Special Assistant to Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Inter-Community Relations (Fulani), Muhammed Abdullahi, confirmed the killing. “We are preparing for his janaza (funeral) as I speak to you now, but the police were here yesterday and have started an investigation,” he said.
Security agencies have not yet identified any suspects, but the Kwara State Police Command has launched an investigation. Officers have visited the crime scene and spoken with witnesses.
The attack has raised several questions, especially since the gunmen did not steal anything from Sakaina. Some residents suspect the killing was targeted, but authorities have not confirmed this.
A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, called on the government to ensure justice. “We need the police to find those behind this crime. Sakaina was a leader, and his death is a big loss,” he said.
