Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has invited the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and other lawmakers to a crucial meeting scheduled for Monday, March 10, 2025. The meeting will take place at the Governor’s Office in Government House, Port Harcourt, and aims to address key governance issues in the state.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tammy Danagogo, announced the invitation in a letter dated March 7, which was obtained by Channels Television. The letter stated that the meeting would focus on providing a suitable place for assembly sittings, settling outstanding allowances for lawmakers, and discussing the state budget.
Fubara Acts on Supreme Court Judgment
Governor Fubara’s invitation follows his earlier commitment to working with all lawmakers in the state. “His Excellency has received the Supreme Court judgment and has therefore directed me to invite you and your colleagues to a meeting,” Danagogo wrote in the letter.
The Supreme Court ruling is seen as a major turning point in the ongoing political tensions in the state. The details of the ruling were not explicitly mentioned in the letter, but its impact appears to be driving efforts towards reconciliation.
Aiming for Stability in Rivers State
The governor’s call for dialogue suggests a move to ease tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government. Over the past months, political disagreements have created divisions within the state’s leadership. By addressing issues such as lawmakers’ allowances and the assembly’s sitting arrangements, Fubara is signaling a willingness to foster cooperation.
Danagogo emphasized the importance of the meeting, stating that it is an opportunity to “chart the way forward in the interest of the good people of Rivers State.”
He urged the lawmakers to attend and participate in discussions that could shape the state’s governance.

What to Expect from the Meeting
Observers believe the meeting could be a turning point in resolving conflicts that have hindered legislative activities in Rivers State. Some analysts suggest that Fubara may use the opportunity to push for unity among lawmakers and restore full legislative functions.
Key issues likely to be discussed include:
- Provision of a befitting space for Assembly sittings – The House of Assembly has faced disruptions, and the governor is expected to propose a permanent location for their sessions.
- Payment of lawmakers’ outstanding allowances – Financial disagreements have been a sticking point, and Fubara’s willingness to address them could help mend relationships.
- Presentation of the 2025 budget – The budget is crucial for development projects, and the governor needs the lawmakers’ support for approval.
A lawmaker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed hope that the meeting would lead to a positive resolution. “We want what is best for Rivers State, and we hope that this meeting will help us move past political differences,” he said.
Can Fubara and the Lawmakers Rebuild Trust?
Political analysts note that the meeting’s success will depend on both parties’ willingness to compromise. Some lawmakers loyal to former governor Nyesom Wike have been at odds with Fubara’s administration, creating friction in governance.
Tony Nwogu, a political analyst, “This meeting is a test of leadership. If both sides are serious about moving the state forward, then we may see a new chapter of cooperation.”
