Barcelona captain and goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has announced his separation from his wife, Daniela ter Stegen, after more than ten years together. The couple, who married in 2017, have two children, Ben and Tom.
The 32-year-old German footballer shared the news on social media, stating that the decision was not easy but was the best step for both of them. He emphasized that their priority remains their children’s well-being and requested privacy during this period of adjustment.
Ter Stegen wrote in a statement on Instagram, “After careful consideration, Dani and I have decided to go our separate ways. This decision was not an easy one, as you can imagine, but we both believe it is the best step for us.”
He reassured fans that they would continue to co-parent their children with love and mutual respect. “Our joint focus is on doing what is best for our children, ensuring they continue to have a loving and stable environment. We remain committed to working together as parents and treating each other with respect and appreciation as we always have.”
Ter Stegen also asked for understanding from the public, especially regarding the privacy of their children. “During this personal time, we kindly ask for your understanding and for respecting our privacy—especially that of our children. Thank you.”

The Barcelona shot-stopper, who joined the club from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014, had been with Daniela since his early days in Spain. The couple settled in the Gracia neighborhood of Barcelona, where they were often seen cycling and shopping together, leading a relatively private and normal life despite his footballing fame.
Ter Stegen has been sidelined for six months due to a knee injury suffered in September. However, there is optimism that he could return to action before the season ends. His recovery is being closely monitored, and Barcelona’s coaching staff, led by Hansi Flick, will soon decide on his playing status. In the meantime, Wojciech Szczesny has been filling in as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
The announcement of Ter Stegen’s separation comes at a challenging time for the player as he works on both his personal and professional recovery.
