Google has introduced Gemini Code Assist, a free artificial intelligence (AI) coding assistant designed to help developers in Nigeria enhance their coding skills and productivity.

The new tool, built on Google’s advanced Gemini 2.0 model, supports all programming languages available in the public domain and is optimized for coding tasks. Google says the tool will help independent developers, students, and startups who often struggle to access high-quality coding resources.

“Providing these tools, regardless of financial capacity, equips the next generation of developers with the essential digital capabilities required for future innovation,” Google stated.

AI Transforming the Coding Process

According to a study by the DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA), more than 75 percent of developers now use AI in their daily work. Google also revealed that AI-generated code is becoming more common, with over 25 percent of its new code created by AI and later validated by engineering teams.

Unlike other free AI coding assistants that limit users to around 2,000 code completions per month, Gemini Code Assist offers up to 180,000 code completions per month. Google says this limit is rarely reached, even by the most dedicated developers.

The tool also features AI-powered code reviews, integrated with GitHub for both public and private repositories, to help streamline the often time-consuming process of reviewing code.

Seamless Integration for Developers

Google has made Gemini Code Assist available in popular Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) such as Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, Firebase, and Android Studio.

Developers can use it to generate code snippets, debug applications, and modify programs without switching between windows. This feature makes the tool particularly useful for programmers working on complex projects.

Google emphasized that expanding Gemini Code Assist aligns with the projected growth of the global developer population, ensuring that more coders, including those in Nigeria, have access to powerful AI-driven coding solutions.
