Mojisola Meranda has resigned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, ending her brief tenure that began after the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
Meranda announced her resignation during a special plenary session on Monday.
“This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” she said while reading her resignation letter aloud.
Her resignation came after a meeting with high-ranking members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to resolve the leadership crisis that has shaken the Assembly since January.
Meranda, who took office on January 13, 2025, also stepped down alongside all principal officers who were appointed with her. Despite her short time in office, many lawmakers praised her leadership.
“She provided stability and carried everyone along. It’s unfortunate her tenure had to end this way,” one legislator remarked.

The Leadership Crisis
The crisis began when Mudashiru Obasa was removed as Speaker by a two-thirds majority of the 40-member Assembly over alleged misconduct. As the deputy speaker, Meranda was sworn in, making history as the first female Speaker of Lagos State.
However, Obasa rejected his removal, claiming the process was illegal and that the Assembly complex had been militarized during the proceedings.
Tensions escalated on February 27, 2025, when Obasa, accompanied by armed security operatives, entered the Assembly Complex, insisting he was still the Speaker.
“My removal did not follow due process, and I remain the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” Obasa declared defiantly.
His colleagues, however, stood by Meranda, reaffirming their loyalty to her leadership.
Meranda’s resignation has raised questions about who will lead the Assembly going forward. With Obasa still claiming his position and APC leaders intervening, political analysts predict more drama in the coming days.
Meanwhile, lawmakers have urged for peace and stability in the House.
“We must put the interest of Lagosians first and ensure that the legislative arm functions properly,” a senior lawmaker said.
