Ohanaeze Denies Calling for Rivers Governor’s Impeachment

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural group of the Igbo people, has denied reports that it called for the impeachment of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. The organization stated that it had no position on the political crisis in the state and warned the public to verify information before accepting it as true.

The controversy began on Saturday when a faction of Ohanaeze reportedly urged the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, to begin impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara. The call came a day after the Supreme Court reinstated Amaewhule and other pro-Nyesom Wike lawmakers who had been sacked earlier.

The statement, allegedly from Ohanaeze, was signed by Okechukwu Isiguzoro, who described himself as the group’s Deputy President-General, and Chief Chinenyeze Ohia, the supposed National Publicity Secretary.

However, in an interview with Sunday PUNCH*, Ohanaeze’s recognized National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, dismissed the claims. He made it clear that the organization had no involvement in the matter.

“That statement didn’t emanate from us. We don’t know anything about it; we don’t have any position on this matter, and we have nothing to say about it,” Chukwu said.

He further urged the public and the media to be cautious about false information. “We are not associated with it. Members of the public, including the media, should always be careful about where they get information. They must verify any information,” he added.

The political situation in Rivers State has been tense, with an ongoing power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The recent Supreme Court ruling, which reinstated the pro-Wike lawmakers, has added to the crisis, with fears that impeachment moves could follow.

While Ohanaeze Ndigbo has distanced itself from any involvement, the statement from the factional group has further deepened the controversy. The group’s internal divisions have led to conflicting claims, making it unclear who truly represents the organization.
