Nyesom Wike admits mistake, vows to correct error

Former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has publicly acknowledged making a mistake but assured the people of Rivers State that he would rectify it in due course.

Speaking at a grand civic reception honouring Chief George Thompson Sekibo’s 20 years of public service in Ogu-Bolo, Rivers State, Wike admitted to his fallibility without specifying the nature of his error.

“I want to say this clearly, in life we have made a mistake. I have made a mistake. I own it up and I say God forgive me. I have said all of you forgive me. But we will correct it at the appropriate time,” Wike declared.

The former governor’s remarks come amidst a political face-off with Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, leading to a polarization of the state House of Assembly into two factions. While Wike backed Fubara as his successor, he did not confirm if this decision was the mistake he referenced.

Expressing his humanity, Wike acknowledged, “I am a human, I am bound to make a mistake. So forgive me for making a wrong judgment. So nobody should kill.”

He emphasized adherence to the law and due process, asserting, “The law will take its course. We must follow due process.”

Additionally, Wike dispelled allegations of seeking worship, stating, “I have never demanded that anybody worship me.”

Addressing his supporters and lawmakers, Wike urged them not to succumb to intimidation and pledged to maintain peace in the state. He assured, “Don’t be afraid. Nobody will remove you as a lawmaker. Our business is to make them fear. We will make them angry every day, and they will continue to make mistakes.”

Reflecting on his political journey, Wike expressed confidence in overcoming challenges, recalling past victories against hostile Federal Governments and lack of support.

The escalating tensions between Wike’s camp and Fubara’s administration have sparked political unrest in Rivers State, with Fubara emphasizing the importance of not worshipping humans and instead recognizing the role of divine intervention.
