The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has elected Olusola Oladoja, a student of the University of Jos, as its new president. Oladoja emerged victorious after a keenly contested election held during the NANS national convention, which began on Sunday and ended with voting late Wednesday.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Oladoja assured Nigerian students that his administration would fight against arbitrary tuition hikes in tertiary institutions across the country.
“We will not allow any unjust increase in tuition fees that will make education inaccessible for the average Nigerian student,” he declared, flanked by other newly elected executive officers.
Commitment to Student Welfare
Oladoja promised to build on the achievements of the outgoing NANS president, Lucky Emonefe, whom he credited with ushering in a new era for student leadership. He also announced plans for a nationwide campus tour to engage students directly and address pressing issues in tertiary institutions.
“We need a leadership that listens, understands, and acts in the best interest of students. That is what my administration will stand for,” he stated.
The new president commended the NANS convention planning committee for conducting what he described as a free, fair, and transparent election. He acknowledged their dedication and commitment to student democracy.

Appeal for Unity
Oladoja called on his fellow candidates in the election to put aside differences and work together for the common good of Nigerian students. “This is a collective victory. We must unite to fight for our rights and demand better welfare and quality education,” he urged.
Outgoing NANS president, Lucky Emonefe, expressed confidence in the new leadership, describing them as credible representatives of Nigerian students. He also confirmed that security agencies and student representatives from various campuses supervised the election.
“I believe this new leadership will continue the struggle for better education and student welfare,” Emonefe said.
A New Era for Student Leadership
With his victory, Oladoja now leads NANS at a time when students across the country are grappling with rising tuition fees, inadequate infrastructure, and other challenges in higher education. His promise to resist tuition hikes and foster student engagement will be closely watched by students and education stakeholders alike.
As he steps into office, all eyes will be on Oladoja to see how he navigates these challenges and delivers on his promises to Nigerian students.
