Pope Francis

The Vatican has intensified preparations for Pope Francis’ possible passing after the 88-year-old pontiff told close aides, “I might not make it this time.” The Swiss Guard, the Vatican’s elite security force, has reportedly been placed under curfew as part of the funeral rehearsals for the Pope.

Health Concerns Intensify

Pope Francis was recently hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after experiencing severe chest pain. Doctors diagnosed him with a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection—commonly known as double pneumonia. This condition is particularly concerning given that the Pope had part of his lung removed when he was younger.

The Vatican confirmed on Tuesday that Francis is receiving cortisone and antibiotics as part of his treatment. However, his condition remains uncertain. Despite his illness, he continues to eat breakfast daily, read newspapers, and carry out some work from his hospital room.

Doctors Express Concern

While the Vatican has not reported that Francis is on supplemental oxygen, medical experts remain cautious. Infectious disease specialist Dr. Carmelo D’Asero warned that the absence of a fever may not be a good sign.

“A high fever shows the immune system is actively fighting the infection,” Dr. D’Asero explained. “When someone has a serious bronchial infection but no fever, it suggests a weaker immune response, which is more concerning. In a way, having a fever might have been a better sign.”

Pope Francis at Peace with His Fate

Despite his fragile health, Pope Francis remains calm. Italian Cardinal Angelo Comastri told broadcaster Rai, “Francis is very calm. His helm is in the hands of the Lord.”

The Pope has already made arrangements for his burial, which will break with traditional practices. In recent weeks, he has also made key decisions regarding the future of the Catholic Church, as internal tensions continue to shape the institution.

Prayers for the Pope

As news of the Pope’s deteriorating health spreads, people have gathered outside Gemelli Hospital in Rome to pray for his recovery.

The Vatican has canceled or rescheduled many of the Pope’s engagements, leaving uncertainty about his upcoming commitments. Officials have not provided a timeline for his discharge, stating only that his condition requires “an appropriate hospital stay.”

For now, the Catholic world watches and prays, hoping that Pope Francis will recover from his latest health scare.
