Tennis legend Serena Williams has responded to criticism over her appearance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, making it clear that she was not trying to be petty.
Last week, Kendrick Lamar made history as the first solo rapper to headline the Super Bowl Halftime Show. His performance drew a record-breaking 133.5 million live viewers and over 38 million views on YouTube, making it the most-watched halftime show in history.
During the performance, Lamar brought out several special guests, including singer SZA, actor Samuel L. Jackson, and Serena Williams. One of the standout moments came when Lamar performed his track Not Like Us, which is widely believed to be a diss track aimed at Drake.
Williams appeared during this song, doing the crip walk, a dance she famously performed after winning a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. However, her brief appearance led to online speculation that she was intentionally taking sides in the Kendrick Lamar-Drake feud.
Williams Shuts Down the Rumors
Following the performance, many social media users accused Williams of disrespecting Drake, whom she briefly dated in the past. The tennis star, however, wasted no time addressing the controversy.
Her husband, Alexis Ohanian, defended her in a tweet, reminding people that Serena had been heavily criticized for the same dance years ago.
“Some of y’all have no idea how criticised Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago and it shows…. This is bigger than the music,” Ohanian wrote.

Williams then responded directly, expressing her gratitude for her husband’s support.
“That there my baby daddy and husband. Always got my back. I love you,” she wrote.
She also explained that she had been too busy with her business ventures to even think about being petty.
“Gosh, I’m so late to the game (I’ve been sick) & busy investing in billion-dollar companies and running @WYNbeauty… def not dancing to be petty lol,” she added.
Williams also pointed out that she has already proven herself through her remarkable career achievements.
“I think I proved 23 times over (not counting four gold medals) that I simply don’t have time for petty. All love and respect always, nothing negative here,” she concluded.
A Champion Focused on Bigger Things
With 23 Grand Slam titles and four Olympic gold medals, Williams is widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Since retiring from professional tennis, she has focused on business ventures, including her beauty brand, WYN Beauty, and other major investments.
Her response to the Super Bowl controversy made it clear that she remains focused on her success and refuses to be drawn into unnecessary drama.
