Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN)

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has denied reports that the national grid collapsed this month, insisting that there has been no such incident in 2025. The company described the claims as false and misleading, urging the public to ignore misinformation about the grid’s status.

No Grid Collapse in 2025

In a statement signed by its management, TCN dismissed the reports of two national grid collapses this year as “mischievous and misleading to the Nigerian populace.” The company warned against the spread of inaccurate information by unauthorized sources.

“We hereby appeal to the general public to disregard this and other inaccurate reports on events and status of the national grid (including records of past events) emanating from unauthorized sources,” the statement read.

TCN emphasized that only the National Control Centre System Operator or its designated backup, the National Supplementary Control Centre (SNCC), has the authority to provide official updates about the grid’s condition.

Clarification on Power Outage

Although TCN denied any national grid collapse, the company admitted that a power outage occurred on February 12 due to a technical fault. A line tripping on the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330kV transmission line, combined with a scheduled outage on the Benin-Egbin 330kV line for mechanical maintenance, led to power disruptions in parts of the country.

“The tripping resulted in a cascaded outage, causing loss of supply within the Abuja, Lagos, and Osogbo axis,” the statement explained. However, the company assured that other parts of the country were unaffected and that full power restoration to the affected areas had already been completed.

Warning Against False Information

TCN urged the public and media outlets to rely only on official statements from its Public Affairs Department for updates on the national grid.

“Members of the public and reporters are therefore advised to please shun malicious and unfounded information about the National Grid that does not emanate from the Public Affairs Department of the TCN,” the statement concluded.

While the company continues to manage the country’s electricity transmission system, it reassured Nigerians of its commitment to providing reliable power supply and addressing any technical challenges that arise.
