The Kano State Police Command has arrested three suspects involved in the kidnapping and killing of a former Gombe State Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Atiku Muazu. The breakthrough came less than 24 hours after a report of the incident was received, thanks to an intelligence-led operation.
Speaking to journalists at the Command’s headquarters in Bompai, Kano, Police Commissioner Salman Garba described the crime as a “heinous act that has devastated the entire community.” He confirmed that the suspects were apprehended through “credible intelligent networking.”
How It Happened
According to Commissioner Garba, the kidnapping occurred on January 8, 2025. Muazu, 64, was lured to Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State under the false pretense of retrieving his car from a mechanic in Kazaure. Instead, he was held hostage for three days before being killed. The suspects had demanded a ransom of ₦20 million, but only ₦2 million was paid.
The principal suspect, Abubakar Hassan, also known as Captain, is a 33-year-old resident of Ringim, Jigawa State. He orchestrated the crime, conspired with four others, and ultimately carried out the killing. The Police recovered a toy gun with six rubber bullets from him.
Other suspects include:
- Adamu Abubakar Adam (29): A resident of Sharada Quarters, Kano, who received the ₦2 million ransom.
- Hamisu, alias Bakin Bross (34): Another resident of Ringim, whose house served as the location where Muazu was held.
The suspects are undergoing investigation at the Command’s Criminal Investigation Department and will face charges upon the conclusion of the inquiry.
Additional Arrests for Other Crimes
The Police Commissioner also disclosed arrests in connection to other violent crimes in the state. In Kabo Local Government Area, armed men invaded the home of Alhaji Auwalu, robbing him of ₦8 million and kidnapping his 16-year-old daughter, Zainab Aliyu. Garba assured the public that efforts were underway to rescue the girl and apprehend the perpetrators.
In another operation, police arrested 17 suspected armed robbers linked to attacks in Hotoro and Kawu Quarters. The gang reportedly looted shops, damaged vehicles, and assaulted residents. Dangerous weapons and seven stolen mobile phones were recovered from the suspects. Additionally, three more robbers were detained for stealing 200 mobile phones in Yankatsari Quarters.
