Former Belgian international footballer Radja Nainggolan was arrested on Monday in connection with an investigation into cocaine trafficking through the port of Antwerp, according to the Brussels prosecutor’s office.
Police conducted a series of morning raids across Belgium, detaining Nainggolan, 36, and several other suspects. The investigation focuses on the importation of cocaine from South America to Europe and its subsequent distribution in Belgium.
“The investigation concerns alleged facts of importation of cocaine from South America to Europe, via the port of Antwerp, and its redistribution in Belgium,” prosecutors stated.
Further details about Nainggolan’s alleged involvement in the case were not disclosed.
From Football Stardom to Controversy
Nainggolan, born in Antwerp, recently came out of retirement to play for Belgian second-tier club Lokeren, marking the latest chapter in a career spanning two decades. He had been without a club since last summer but made an impressive debut for Lokeren over the weekend, scoring in a 1-1 draw against K. Lierse.
His arrest comes just days after this comeback, leaving fans and the football community shocked.

The tattooed midfielder earned a reputation as a talented yet controversial figure both on and off the field. During his career, he played for top Italian clubs, including Roma, Inter Milan, and Cagliari, and represented Belgium’s national team in 30 matches, scoring six goals.
However, his off-field behavior often made headlines. In 2021, Nainggolan returned to Belgium to join Royal Antwerp, but his time there was marked by controversy. He parted ways with the club in early 2023, months after being suspended for smoking an electronic cigarette on the team bench during a match.
Investigation Shocks the Football World
Nainggolan’s arrest has sparked widespread reactions. Many fans expressed disbelief, while some were quick to highlight his history of disciplinary issues.
While prosecutors have yet to release detailed information about the case, the allegations involve a significant operation to smuggle cocaine into Europe. Antwerp, one of Europe’s busiest ports, is often targeted by drug trafficking networks for its strategic location.
As the investigation unfolds, Nainggolan’s future, both on and off the field, remains uncertain. His arrest is a major blow to his recent attempt to rebuild his career after years of controversy.
The case highlights the growing challenges European authorities face in combating drug trafficking through key ports like Antwerp. For now, Nainggolan and the other suspects await further legal proceedings as prosecutors work to uncover the full extent of the operation.
