The Lagos State House of Assembly has cautioned its former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, against actions that could disrupt the legislative arm and create political tension in the state. This warning comes after Obasa claimed that his removal as Speaker did not follow due process.
Obasa, addressing his supporters on his return from the United States on Saturday, maintained that his impeachment on January 13 lacked procedural fairness. However, the Assembly issued a strong response, reaffirming their support for the newly elected Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, and standing firmly by their decision to impeach Obasa.
“It is imperative to clarify that over two-thirds of the members of the Lagos State House of Assembly are solidly united behind the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda,” said Ogundipe Olukayode in a statement signed on behalf of the Assembly. “We stand by the decision taken to impeach Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa and we shall defend our position to the latter.”
The lawmakers emphasized that the impeachment was carried out within their constitutional rights and in the best interest of good governance. “All members were elected from their various constituencies across the state, and we all have the inalienable rights under the necessary statutory orders to remove our principal officers, including the Speaker,” Olukayode added.

The Assembly criticized Obasa’s recent comments and actions, describing them as “uncalled for and unparliamentary.” They urged the former Speaker to accept the decision peacefully to avoid unnecessary tension.
“I appeal to the former Speaker to toe the line of peace and harmony as being followed by others, as the current intransigent posture will heat the polity and not augur well,” Olukayode warned. He further emphasized that any attempts to destabilize the legislature would be met with resistance from the majority of Assembly members who had unanimously elected Meranda.
The Assembly also pledged their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Lagos State. “Peace we want in Lagos, and peace we will achieve,” the statement concluded.
Obasa was impeached following allegations of misconduct and mismanagement. Despite his claims of improper process, the Assembly remains resolute in their decision, highlighting their collective responsibility to uphold the integrity of the legislative arm and promote harmony within the state.
With Meranda now at the helm, the lawmakers are focused on fostering good governance and ensuring a productive relationship with other arms of government.
