The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially recognized Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the leader of the party in Rivers State. This announcement followed a closed-door meeting between the governor and top party officials at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday night.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, PDP National Treasurer Ahmed Mohammed praised Fubara for his role in stabilizing the party amidst challenges. “We came to appreciate the doggedness of the governor in ensuring that the PDP is becoming more stabilized and focused in Rivers State,” Mohammed stated.
The NWC’s endorsement of Fubara comes on the heels of a High Court judgment that nullified controversial congresses conducted by the faction loyal to his predecessor and former political ally, Nyesom Wike. The ruling reinstated the leadership of the Rivers PDP under Fubara’s control, dealing a significant blow to Wike’s camp.
The political rift between Fubara and Wike, which began in October 2023, had left the Rivers PDP factionalized. However, the court’s decision has strengthened Fubara’s position within the party.
“There was a court ruling that dissolved the purported party congresses held in the state, and other leaders were appointed to pioneer affairs of the party,” Mohammed explained, further emphasizing the governor’s efforts to unify the party.
The visit to Fubara is part of the NWC’s broader effort to engage with governors and party leaders elected under the PDP. According to Mohammed, these consultations aim to strategize and reposition the party for future success.
“Prior to meeting with Governor Fubara, the NWC had visited Governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa,” he noted.

Mohammed also underscored the significance of the High Court’s ruling in Rivers State, which he described as a critical step in solidifying the party’s leadership under Fubara.
During their visit, the NWC also provided updates on a recent Court of Appeal ruling reinstating Sir Ude Okoye as the PDP’s National Secretary. Mohammed assured party members that the NWC fully supports Okoye and is committed to working with him to strengthen the party.
“We will continue to work with him and also request the support and backing of the governors. As you are aware, up to this moment, no court has set aside the ruling of the Court of Appeal,” he said. “This case does not have any stay of execution or similar orders, so members of the NWC are in agreement to work alongside the current National Secretary of the party.”
Looking ahead, Mohammed expressed confidence in the PDP’s ability to bounce back in the 2027 general elections. “Come May 2027, PDP will bounce back,” he declared, signaling the party’s readiness to rebuild and reclaim its place on the national stage.
