The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has dismantled several illegal drug spots in Abuja in a major operation aimed at tackling drug-related crimes. The operation, carried out by the Anti-Narcotics Unit on Thursday, targeted areas notorious for drug sales and consumption across the city.
The police raided locations in Gwagwalada, Lugbe, Wuse Zone 5, and the AYA Roundabout. During the operation, they arrested eight suspects and recovered significant quantities of ammunition, suspected cannabis, and other illicit drugs.
FCT police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed the successful raids and detailed the items recovered. “On January 23, 2025, police operatives of the FCT Command from the Anti-Narcotics Unit successfully carried out a series of coordinated raid operations targeting identified hotspots within the Federal Capital Territory known to be used by criminal elements for the sale and consumption of illicit drugs and substances,” Adeh said.
The operation focused on locations notorious for drug activities. At Gwagwalada’s SDP Junction under the bridge, police recovered 100 rounds of live 7.62 x 39mm ammunition. Similar raids were conducted at Lugbe Federal Housing near the Tipper Garage, Wuse Zone 5 by Access Bank, and the AYA Roundabout.

Adeh explained that the suspects attempted to flee when they spotted the police but were quickly apprehended. “During the raid, the suspects sighted police operatives and took to their heels. They were given a hot chase and eight suspects were arrested,” she added.
The raids yielded significant recoveries, including 100 rounds of live ammunition, a large quantity of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis, and other illicit drugs. The police believe the operation will disrupt criminal networks and reduce drug-related activities in the city.
The FCT Police Command emphasized its commitment to combating crime and ensuring the safety of residents. “This operation is part of our ongoing effort to rid the city of criminal elements and to ensure the safety and security of the Federal Capital Territory,” Adeh stated.
The spokesperson also urged residents to support the police by providing information about criminal activities in their communities. “We call on members of the public to cooperate with the police by sharing timely and credible information that can aid our efforts to tackle crime effectively,” she said.
