Julius Abure, National Chairman of Labour Party

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has reaffirmed Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party, putting an end to ongoing leadership disputes within the party.

Delivering the judgment on Friday, a three-member panel led by Justice Hamma Barka upheld an earlier ruling from November 13, 2024, which confirmed Abure’s position. Justice Barka emphasized that the decision remains valid and has not been overturned by any court.

“The judgment of November 13, 2024, declaring Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party stands,” Justice Barka stated during the ruling.

Appeals Struck Out

The ruling addressed two separate appeals filed by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman, the caretaker committee, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The court clarified that it does not have jurisdiction over internal party leadership matters, describing such issues as non-justiciable.

Justice Barka also declared that any judgment delivered without jurisdiction is null and void. As a result, the court struck out the October 8, 2024, ruling by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, which had attempted to challenge Abure’s leadership.

“The Federal High Court acted outside its jurisdiction, making its judgment ineffective,” the Appeal Court declared.

Leadership Disputes Resolved

This judgment puts to rest the controversies surrounding the leadership of the Labour Party, which had seen various factions vying for control. With the court’s decision, Julius Abure remains officially recognized as the party’s leader.

The decision provides clarity for the Labour Party as it prepares for upcoming political activities. Party members and supporters have welcomed the ruling as a step toward stability and unity.

Julius Abure’s leadership has been a central pillar for the Labour Party, particularly as the party continues to position itself as a major force in Nigerian politics. The court’s reaffirmation of his chairmanship is expected to strengthen his mandate and foster internal cohesion.
