The Lagos State Government has unveiled a new initiative aimed at supporting students preparing for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations. Dubbed the EKO Learners’ Support Programme, the initiative was announced on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, during a ceremony at the Education Resource Centre in Ojodu, Lagos.
Supporting Academic Success
Speaking at the event, Alli-Balogun described education as the cornerstone of development and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to equipping students with the tools they need to excel.
“This initiative has been designed to broadcast a head-start of 320 lessons in 10 different subjects, including English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Government, History, Literature-in-English, and Yoruba,” the commissioner said. He explained that the lessons would be delivered by highly qualified teachers, selected through a rigorous screening process.
The programme, which spans 26 weeks, features 30-minute lessons to be aired on Lagos Television and shared on popular social media platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). Each episode will also be archived for easy access, allowing students to review the content at their convenience.
“The lessons after broadcast on television are archived permanently on social media platforms,” Alli-Balogun noted. “This approach ensures students can engage with the materials at their own pace and interact with teachers and peers online.”

Encouraging Students and Educators
Alli-Balogun urged students to make full use of the resources provided, stressing that their success depends on hard work and dedication. He also expressed gratitude to the educators, partners, and stakeholders who contributed to making the programme a reality.
“This initiative is a testament to our belief in the power of collaboration,” he said. “It’s through these partnerships that we can continue to innovate and provide our students with the resources they need to succeed.”
Innovative Learning for Modern Times
The EKO Learners’ Support Programme represents a shift towards leveraging technology to enhance education. By making lessons available on television and social media, the initiative aims to bridge the gap between traditional classroom learning and the digital age, ensuring students across Lagos State have access to quality educational content.
Students preparing for WAEC and NECO now have a valuable resource to help them tackle their exams, while educators and parents can also play an active role in supporting their academic journey.
