The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the recent political alliance between former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, the camp of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), describing it as a “gathering of disgruntled individuals” that will yield no significant political impact.
This response comes after El-Rufai, a prominent APC member, held a closed-door meeting with SDP leaders and Atiku’s allies, sparking speculation about a broader opposition alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections. The meeting reportedly included notable figures such as former Chief Security Officer to Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, and Otunba Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar.
Although the purpose of the meeting was not officially disclosed, analysts have linked it to the League of Northern Democrats (LND), a group led by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau. The LND aims to form a unified political platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the next election.

SDP Denies Alliance with Atiku and El-Rufai
Amid the swirling rumors, SDP National Chairman Shehu Gabam denied any formal alliance with El-Rufai or Atiku. He emphasized the party’s focus on strengthening its internal structures and offering credible alternatives to Nigerians. “Our priority is to build a solid foundation for the SDP, not to engage in alliances based on speculation,” Gabam stated.
APC Downplays Opposition Efforts
Reacting to the development, Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, APC National Vice Chairman (South-East), dismissed the meeting as inconsequential. “As it is in the Bible, surely they shall gather and they shall scatter. We are not worried about this so-called alliance. It is merely a gathering of disgruntled people trying to lick their wounds,” Arodiogbu said.
He criticized El-Rufai’s political reputation, describing him as “a man who cannot be trusted across regions” due to his controversial statements. “El-Rufai is desperate for recognition, but his actions have made him politically isolated,” Arodiogbu added.
Highlighting the achievements of President Tinubu’s administration, Arodiogbu argued that the opposition lacks a credible agenda to challenge the ruling party in 2027. “What will they use to campaign? Reintroducing fuel subsidies? Not possible. Nigerians are already seeing the benefits of the President’s reforms, including stabilizing the economy and paving the way for fuel exportation,” he stated.
APC Open to Addressing El-Rufai’s Future
While dismissing the opposition’s alliance, Nze Chidi Duru, APC Deputy National Organizing Secretary, acknowledged El-Rufai’s constitutional right to associate with any political group. He, however, noted that the party would only act if El-Rufai officially declares his political position.
“We are in a democracy where freedom of association is guaranteed. Unless a decision has been made, the APC will not speculate. If El-Rufai decides to leave, the party will respond appropriately,” Duru said.
He reiterated that the APC remains focused on delivering its manifesto and the dividends of democracy to Nigerians. “Governance, not speculation, is what matters. The party’s commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians will be our ultimate scorecard,” Duru concluded.
